GCC and toolchain developer

Job Description

As SUSE Labs toolchain developer you will be working with the community to improve the Linux toolchain. Your focus will be the GNU Compiler Collection (GCC). Your responsibilities will include fixing implementation problems, discussing improvement ideas and implementing them when it is concluded they are viable. You will be presenting your work by providing white papers or articles or by giving presentations at technical conferences.

You will be helping to stabilize the toolchain for upcoming product releases by debugging reported problems, fixing, documenting, reviewing, and testing the fixes. You will be using your expertise to advise SUSE product and project managers regarding the technologies to enable and the strategic directions to take.

As part of the SUSE Labs toolchain team, you will be responsible to provide back-up assistance to the support department on escalated issues (L3) from enterprise customers that need experienced expertise to be solved. You will help to integrate solutions and fixes back into SUSE products, both for current releases (maintenance) and future ones.

You might participate in joint development projects with our hardware or software partners.

Responsibilities:

• Investigate issues encountered with new compilers and other toolchain components. Analyze and report them as appropriate.
• Maintain and extend our infrastructure for early discovery of such issues.
• Provide GCC and toolchain improvements, especially in areas of design and performance.
• Fix issues that fall within your area of expertise both upstream and in SUSE products.
• Provide level 3 support (L3) for toolchain issues escalated by our enterprise customers.
• Integration of temporary fixes and solutions to reported bugs and problems.
• Participate actively in discussions on relevant mailing lists, retrieving feedback from users, partners, and customers.
• Preparation of white papers and articles, as well as giving presentations at technical conferences.

Experience Required:

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent.
• Highly skilled in C and C++ development.
• Experience with GCC development.
• Rudimentary knowledge of low-level details of ELF and assembly programming.
• Broad knowledge of Linux and Unix system tools and common scripting languages, particularly bash and python.
• Experience with performance analysis of CPU intensive workloads is welcome.
• Understanding the DWARF debug information format and associated infrastructure would be appreciated.
• Very good ability to efficiently communicate in English.
• Organized and reliable working style.
