Te Papa Atawhai, Department of Conservation (DOC) serves to protect and sustain nature across Aotearoa. We put nature and people at the heart of our mahi, guided by te reo Māori, te ao Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi. We do this by:
- protecting land, species, ecosystems, and cultural heritage for conservation purposes
- managing threats and adverse impacts
- being a voice for conservation
- connecting people to nature.
As a Heritage and Visitor Ranger, you will contribute to projects related to Heritage sites as well as projects surrounding infrastructure for visitors with the support of the team.
The position will be focussed on:
- assisting with work planning and leading field-based operations
- mentoring and coaching of staff
- participating in team safety briefings and taking responsibility for your safety and the safety of your teammates
- maintenance and care of our popular campground and amenity areas
- assisting with hut cleaning, maintenance, building alterations/repairs and painting
- assisting with upgrade projects, including track resurfacing work, bridge maintenance and other minor works
- front and back country track clearance (using scrub-bars and chainsaws)
- assisting the wider teams when required.
While this position is mostly field-based, you will also be required to complete office-based tasks assisting the Supervisor and Senior Ranger with planning and organising projects.

We need a proven team player who is great at communicating and has practical hands-on skills. If you have the following attributes, we are keen to hear from you:
- good building/carpentry skills and an eye for detail to ensure all our assets are maintained to a high standard
- hands on practical skills ideally with experience in facilities maintenance
- a good level of physical fitness with experience in the backcountry
- a strong health and safety focus
- good written and verbal communication
- ability to use phone-based apps or a willingness to learn
- a valid driver license
- a current First Aid Certificate or willingness to obtain.
- experience and/or qualifications using trailers, chainsaws, scrub bars, spray gear, 4WD vehicles, and working with helicopters are an advantage.

The salary range for this position is $58,314 to $73,401 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
